- Main article: Recon
Recon(Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict) or 偵察車(失われた光) is a Land Unit seen in all Advance Wars games. True to its name, reconnaissance in Fog of War is its primary job, especially along Roads and properties. In battle, it fares well against Infantry and Bikes, but poorly against most other units.
Many types of terrain hinder recons due to their 'Tire A' movement type. A Rig can build a makeshift road on Plains by building Temporary Airports and Beaches by building Temporary Ports, but carry only enough Materials for one of these, so each additional tile costs you 5,000 more funds unless you use Greyfield's CO Power.
Recons are initially introduced in Days of Ruin, and become buildable in New Allies.
Strategy[]
Compared to previous games, several units in Days of Ruin have improved Vision, but among land units recons still tie for longest vision range with Missiles and infantry and Mechs on Mountains. Due to how terrain is revealed along each units' path in Days of Ruin, recons' fast movement is a huge boon to their scouting. They can pass by hidden terrain with U-turns and long sweeps to reveal it, so you can keep them off the front line. Compared to Flares, recons are better at scouting the front line and wide open areas, but flares can reveal specific targets behind obstacles such as mountains, Seas, and enemy units.
Recons have some other uses outside of FoW. They can traverse most maps quickly to prevent enemy infantry and bikes from capturing properties, and take on several of them without severe damage. They even hold up decently well against other recons. They can mop up weakened units and block enemy movement in a pinch.
However, in mid to late game, they are easily countered by Tanks, B-Copters, Anti-Airs and even mechs, so they aren't worth even their low cost later on. They are slowed by plains and Woods, so on maps where these types of terrain are plentiful, a Recon will have worse movement than a tank. In general, avoid deploying large numbers of these units, since you only need one or two to scout and interrupt captures.
