Neotanks

Neotankss of each force from AW2.

Neotanks are a Land Unit. To date, they have appeared in two games: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising and Advance Wars: Dual Strike. Neotanks are significantly more powerful than Medium Tanks, though not as powerful as Megatanks. They can use their main cannon to attack Land and Naval Units, as well as infantries, Battle Copters and Transport Copters with their Machine Gun.

The tanks are based on a single, uniform design by Black Hole, so the Neotanks of all factions look alike.

Unlocking in Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

To use Neotanks in the Campaign mode of Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, players must capture specific cities during the campaign to obtain maps to Black Hole Labs. This will unlock a new mission on the map of each of the four respective forces. Upon capturing the Lab, that force's army can produce Neotanks. Lab levels are always timed, either because the enemy is trying to destroy the lab, or additional reinforcements are on their way.

Note that if you had completed a mission where the city containing the map is present without capturing it, the faction who didn't obtain the map will lose the chance to produce Neotanks for the rest of the campaign. It's highly advised to hunt down and capture the city that contains the map, as it can greatly help with future missions.

Outside of Campaign mode, Neotanks is one of the vehicle units that can be deployed in the Factory by all players, regardless of whether they've unlocked them in the campaign or not.

Strategy

Neotanks are very powerful against almost every ground units, being able to wipe out infantry and weaker vehicles in one hit. Although they are not as strong as Megatanks, Neotanks have several advantages over them. Neotanks can move 50% faster, carry twice the fuel, three times the ammunition, and cost 20% less to build. This makes Neotanks much more effective than Megatanks when deployed in drawn-out battles. With even number however, Neotanks will always lose against Megatanks. Neotanks are also extremely weak against indirect and Bomber attacks, with 2 or 3 barrages usually enough to destroy a Neotank.

Neotanks are extremely expensive to build and can be eliminated by much cheaper indirect units. Their strong attack mustn't be overestimated, as misplacement could cost you a very expensive unit, setting your economy back for many turns.

Competitive Play

In the campaigns and some War Room missions of Black Hole Rising and Dual Strike, Neotanks are good for busting pipeseams, destroying Md. Tanks and overall breaking through defenses. In competitive plays, Neotanks are rarely used, saved for COs who can reduce their costs.

Medium Tanks are already uncommon to begin with, and now with Neotanks, a unit that's more expensive, extremely situational and can be countered all the same make it an unpreferable option to deploy. It's generally better to build cheaper units than giving grounds to your opponent in order to save up to buy a single Neotank. The only situation where Neotanks are a viable option to build is if you are at a significant economic advantage and is in need of more immediate firepower. If used correctly, a single Neotank can break through a hard defense, allowing your other units to flow through, or to delay the enemy's advances as you slowly build up your army.
