Strategy[]
Infantries still remain a staple use for competitive gaming. However, they are much more difficult to use in this game than previous and requires a lot more tact.
Infantry has reduced firepower, with exception against other soldiers. You can try chipping the last few HP of units like in previous games, but the guarantee of destroying them is slimmer than before.
With rising costs of Infantry (+500), Infantry faces stiff competition with the other 2 soldiers. Mechs having a reduced price (-500) and the introduction of Bikes (same 2500 price as Mechs and goes up to 5 squares) means you will have to decide on whether or not to build Infantry. It is not to say that you should not build Infantry at all, but mid-to-late game you will have to decide which better suits your situation. For instance, if there are cities that are 4-5 blocks away, you may consider building Bikes instead for faster captures in the early game.
While in previous games you can produce a lot of infantry to meatshield and protect your stronger units, doing so here in a reckless manner can benefit your opponent quickly. Your opponent using stronger units to target weakened Infantry or can OHK them means they level up; having too much meatshields can get their units to Veteran mode at 20+ Attack and Defense. Having your opponent utilize their CO Zones to attack your infantry also means they can charge their bar much quicker. Combined with that and meatshielding used in a reckless fashion can end the game for you.
Baiting properly with Infantry, however, remains better to do here than previous now that meatshielding requires a lot more caution. Should your opponent destroy that Infantry just to level that unit up or increase the CO Bar, you can counter back and disrupt their rush with your units while also making it harder for their units to properly level up.
Infantry does have a critical benefit that can catch people off-guard: It can do decent damage to Anti-Tanks in a cost exchange difference so that your vehicular units and B-Copters are safe from harm, making Anti-Tanks less effective.
You have to be a lot more careful on using Infantry and decide if you want to build them over Mechs and Bikes.
Trivia[]
- The Rubinelle infantry is based on Vietnam War era American infantry. Their guns resemble the M16 assault rifles without a carrying handle and a 20 round magazine, and they wear an M1 helmet. They appear to fire from the hip.
- The Lazurian Army and IDS infantry is based on Soviet-era Russian infantry. Their guns resemble the PPSh-41 submachine gun, judging by the barrel, wooden buttstock, and the 71-round drum magazine. They wear "garrison caps" (pilotkas), standard-issue summer headgear for WWII-era Soviet armed forces. Unlike the Rubinelle forces, they fire from the shoulder.
- Infantry are the most commonly pre-deployed unit in Days of Ruin, with 73 deploys in total.
