Flares(Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict) or 照明砲(失われた光) are a Land Unit. To date their one and only appearance is in Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. Although offensively weak (their only weapon being a Machine Gun) they have the unique ability to fire Flares which illuminate squares of terrain in Fog of War. For obvious reasons, on maps with no FOW this ability has no effect and is obsolete.
Compared to the Recon, Flare does significantly more damage against infantries as well as similar anti infantry units (oddly including the ability to cost efficiently engage Anti-Airs), giving it a niche outside FoW map as an useful low-cost defensive unit. Mobility wise, the Flare is significantly slower, but much less hindered by rough terrain.
Flares are initially introduced in Moving On, and become buildable in New Allies.

Overview[]

A Flare in Advance Wars Days Of Ruin
In FoW, Flares can use their ability once per turn (provided they have enough ammunition left). Each unit has a range of 5 and a single flare illuminates all squares in an area of 2 around the target, also lighting up Buildings, Woods and Reefs. Flares may not move and fire a flare on the same turn.
Flares benefit from being relatively cheap and easy to deploy, being passable options against lightly armored enemies or support units caught off-guard. Flares are an excellent support unit for both indirect units (for spotting) and directs (for ambush prevention).
Be cautious on randomly using flares to light up areas. If flares are not in cities to supply, Rigs are going to be needed to supply.
Outside of FoW, Flares prove to be a niche unit at best. If the situation calls for a counter to soldier-spamming, Flares will deal good damage but are unlikely to score a OHK. Anti-Airs have more overall viability for this purpose if you can afford them. Recons can check early captures more reliably and cheaply, provided the path is at least partially paved and free from forests. However, if you find yourself in need of a half-measure, whether it be due to funding, terrain, or time constraints, Flares will check everything weaker than a tank.
