Cruisers

Cruisers of each force from AW2.

Cruisers are a Naval Unit. They can carry up to 2 helicopter units, which include the B-Copters and T-Copters. They are also a good anti-air and anti-sub unit, protecting Battleships and Landers from their primary counters as well as offering useful firepower if needed.

A Cruiser in Advance Wars : Days Of Ruin

Cruisers are an interesting unit with a variety of uses. Their ability to load copter units can protect the copters from being shot down by Fighters and B-Copters, while being able to effectively take down those air units themselves. The loaded units are also refueled (only if you keep the unit loaded for the rest of the turn), so Cruisers can be naval APCs, refueling copters when they are running low on ammo and fuel and are far away from allied bases. This means that in certain situations, Cruisers can save two B-Copters, which has the combined cost equalling one Cruiser, from being destroyed. They are also cheap and viable escorts for expensive Battleships, protecting them from preying Submarines.

While Cruisers can usually deal significant damage to Fighters and Bombers and are able to wipe out the copter units in one hit, defensively, Cruisers are weak against air units. B-Copters and Bombers can negate the effectiveness of Cruisers in two strikes, and if caught in the range of indirects and vehicular units, Cruisers can easily be made quick work of by a Medium Tank.

In Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Cruisers have been buffed: they can now attack other naval units aside from Submarines. However, they only deal minimal damage to them, especially Battleships and Carriers. They also take less damage from Air Units, particularly B-Copters. They also deal more damage to Fighters and Bombers, and they can wipe out Bombers in one hit if they get the first strike.

It should be noted that Cruisers should not be used as the main attackers against non-sub naval units. It is recommended to use them to finish off damaged naval units, after being damaged by Battleships and Subs.

The Cruisers are a peculiar unit, being able to counter units that are also good counters against them saved for Submarines. Therefore it is crucial that Cruisers are properly positioned so that they will always get the first strike, and don't get caught out by other units.

In Days of Ruin, their cost is reduced by 2000G, making them an even more useful unit.

Competitive Play[]

As naval units, Cruisers can traverse sea tiles, making them very effective at chasing and taking down fleeing aircraft. Also thanks for their ability to load and resupply helicopters, Cruisers can be a viable unit in most games, even on maps where naval warfare isn't promoted. A decently priced unit with many purposes, Cruiser in numbers can protect your helicopters in disadvantageous situations and can eliminate more expensive air units and submarines, given that they attack first.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being named as Cruisers, all of them have the box missile launcher position more similar to some destroyers and frigates, while the only cruiser that highly resembles those Cruisers is the CGN-36 California before overhauling in 1990.
  • The Orange Star and Rubinelle (NRA and 12th Battalion) Cruisers are very likely based on the American Brooke/Garcia class frigate.
  • Ironically, the Cruisers of the Russia/Soviet-theme Blue Moon is based on the American Farragut-class Destroyer 1958 Model, distinguished by the rarely-seen fully angled boiler.
  • The Yellow Comet, despite closely resembling Imperial Japan, has the Cruisers more similar to the Chinese Type-053H2G Frigate for its 2x3tube SSM launcher.
  • The Black Hole cruiser in the Re-Boot Camp loosely resembles the Korean KDDX-class destroyer concept.
