Battleships

The Battleships of each Force from AW2.

Battleships are a type of Naval Unit. To date they have appeared in every Advance Wars game, and every Nintendo Wars game except Game Boy Wars 3. They are the most powerful indirect unit in the game as well as one of the few naval units that can attack from afar. In Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, they are the only indirect unit that can move and fire on the same turn.

A Battleship in Advance Wars : Days Of Ruin

Being a naval unit, Battleships can be stationed on sea or reef tiles, saving land spaces for other units. The Battleship has firepower comparable to the Rocket Launcher, able to take out all land units within 1 or 2 hit saved for the Megatanks. Battleships are indirect units, with a minimum range of 2 and the maximum of 6, meaning Battleships can outrange Rocket Launchers not under Grit's control. This makes Battleship an extremely good support unit, able to deal heavy damage to all land unit without fear of retaliation.

Their long range and heavy firepower come at a huge cost however, with the Battleship tied with the Megatanks for the second most expensive unit in the game, only beaten by Carriers. This makes saving up money to deploy them a huge risk, especially since their land counterpart, the Rocket Launchers, are almost only half the cost of one Battleship.

The Battleships are also completely defenseless against air units, unable to fire at them and are countered cost-effectively by other indirect units and Submarines. Battleships should be positioned far away from land, at least 6 tiles away and accompanied by anti-air units such as Cruisers. If caught out and engaged by a unit that is a good counter against them, Battleships can only withstand at most 2 attacks. Like all naval units, Battleships can be attacked by direct vehicular units on shoal tiles.

In Days of Ruin, the Battleships' cost is lowered by 3000G, however, their range is nerfed, only having a range of 3-5. They can however, fire after moving. This makes them the only indirect unit that can move and fire at the same turn, increasing the Battleships' versatility and survivability at the cost of their range.

Competitive Play[]

Due to their high cost, naval units are usually uncommon in most matches, and the Battleships are definitely not an exception. Being a naval unit, while Battleships are usually out of harm's way, their movement is limited and can be engaged easily by air units. Battleships thrive the most on maps with a large body of water, but even then Submarines can make quick work out of them and they aren't protected by other equally expensive naval units.

The Battleship is an extremely niche unit that unfortunately is more trouble than its worth. Only on water-orientated maps, drawn-out battles where advances are bogged down or in the hands of Colin and Hachi, where their costs are reduced do Battleships become a viable unit.

Trivia[]

  • The Orange Star battleship resembles the American Iowa Class Battleship.
  • The Blue Moon battleship resembles the never completed Russian Sovetsky Soyuz Class Battleship, which would probably be the second heaviest battleship built.
  • The Green Earth battleship is based on the German navy's Bismarck during WWII, the largest German battleship ever built at the time.
  • The Yellow Comet battleship resembles the Japanese Yamato-class battleship, the heaviest battleship ever built.
  • The Black Hole battleship in the Re-Boot Camp resembles an oversized Zumwalt-class stealth destroyer.
